What is Hermes Agent?

Hermes Agent is an open-source AI assistant built by NousResearch that runs on your own computer instead of in someone else's cloud. It can chat, browse the web, run tools, remember things between sessions and connect to Telegram, WhatsApp and Discord. With over 200,000 stars on GitHub, it is one of the most popular AI agents in the world.

What can Hermes Agent do?

Hermes is more than a chatbot. It writes and edits text, searches the web, summarizes documents, runs scheduled tasks, manages files, and can operate a browser. Through its skill system it learns reusable abilities, and through messaging gateways you can talk to it from your phone via Telegram or WhatsApp — like a personal employee that lives on your PC.

Is Hermes Agent free?

Yes. The software itself is open source (MIT license) and free forever. It needs an AI model to think with: the free Nous Portal account is enough to start — you sign in with your browser, no API key required. You can also plug in your own OpenRouter, Anthropic or OpenAI key.

What do I need to run it?

A normal computer: Windows 10/11 or macOS 12+, about 5 GB of free disk space and an internet connection. You do not need a GPU — the AI model runs in the cloud, only the agent itself runs locally, which is exactly why your data and files stay on your machine.

Why do people find it hard to install?

The official installation uses a terminal: you paste a command into PowerShell or the shell, wait through Python, Node.js and Git setup, then answer an English-only configuration wizard. Developers find this trivial; everyone else gets stuck on execution policies, PATH errors and provider questions.
